REVIEWING --- A Thousand Splendid Suns-- by Khaleed Hosseini

After what seemed like ages I picked up a book and decided to go through the gist to ensure it was eye candy material filled with humour on a sultry Monday afternoon...... I turned to be so very wrong...It so turned out that the book was the very opposite of being Eye candy material yet it was so articulately put...soaked with heartbreaking yet inspiring facets of life that I ended up reading it front to back in a span of three hours..

The book I am talking about is "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini... Does the name ring a bell??? For all you book worms out there i am sure you would have read the best seller "The kite runner" a few years ago penned down by the very same author.. Well I didn't at that juncture and A Thousand Splendid Suns was my first book by the author.

What makes this book a compelling read is the way Hosseini pens it...so very soaringly lyrical yet so very devastating and heart wrenching... set on the topography of a poverty stricken country called Afghanistan... The book begins with the life story of Mariam jo-- The protagonist and the various ups and downs of her life..How her life goes for a toss when she is forcefully married to a fellow 30 years her senior at the tender age of 15.... and how she finds solace and love from the hands of her husbands second wife. The way the two bond like friends...like a mother and daughter with each other...The ruthless chastising & physical assaults inflicted by her "so called" better half .A life of desperation filled with struggle against starvation, brutality and fear... and endurance beyond all imagination .... The way she protects her husbands second wife... the unblemished love for her step son... and ultimately the sacrifice she makes to see her "daughter/friend" being freed from the hands of the beast through the ultimate sacrifice and heroism...

The book is an unforgettable one portraying a wounded country ...the angst and pain & sufferings during the rule of the Taliban.. the story of unconditional love ... one of family & friendship ..

Truly a masterpiece.. makes it a compelling read :)
